Finally, a team from Minnesota is tasting success. The Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 66-65 in their Game 1 matchup. This is the first round of the WNBA playoffs and the Lynx are one win away from advancing to the conference championship.
Seimone Augustus nailed a huge two point bucket with under a minute to play to put the Lynx up for good and seal the Game 1 win. Lindsay Whalen led the scoring with 20 points and Augustus had 19 for a close second. Whalen also added five rebounds and five assists. Rebekkah Brunson had 14 rebounds to go along with 4 points. She was a huge presence down low for the Lynx. On the other side of the ball, Becky Hammon and Danielle Adams tied for the team lead with 16 points each. The starters logged the brunt of the minutes for both teams.
This was the first time the Lynx had made the playoffs since 2004, and the fans have really paid attention. 11,891 fans showed up to Game 1, which was more than 7,000 more than showed up to their first home playoff game seven years ago. The players really fed off the energy of the crowd and home town favorite, Lindsay Whalen, was very pleased. Maya Moore struggled in her first WNBA playoff game scoring only ten points, but she looks forward to playing better in the future.
It's nice to see that Minnesota fans are finally starting to get some joy out of their sports teams and even nicer that it is coming from the unexpected Lynx.
