The Minnesota Vikings lost their season opener this afternoon to the San Diego Chargers, 24-17. Leading 17-7 at the half, many Vikings fans, including myself, believed that we had this game in the bag. Well, not quite. Our offensive line couldn't stop a flea from penetrating their barricade and the defensive line couldn't seem to figure out when the ball was going to be snapped. Don't get me wrong, no one was expecting the Vikings to go to San Diego and defeat an AFC favorite easily, but the way the game ended hurt.
Percy Harvin led off the game with 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and jumpstarted the Vikings season. Later in the half, Adrian Peterson rumbled for a hard fought 46 yard gain, which eventually led to a Donovan McNabb-Michael Jenkins 3-yard connection. The defense was playing well and the offense was adequate when halftime came. Well, that would not continue. McNabb ended the game with only 39 yards passing which was good for the 8th worst passing game in the history of the Minnesota Vikings. Letroy Guion jumped offsides twice in the last two minutes to seal the deal for the Chargers and Charlie Johnson couldn't have blocked a defensive lineman if he wasn't even trying. The minuscule passing numbers weren't even McNabb's fault. To be completely honest, I thought that McNabb played an okay game and showed some impressive pocket presence today. He ran for 32 yards on 3 rushes which was a great average. Other than that though, the Vikings were not impressive today and I will look for a large improvement in both lines come next week's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
