The sports world is in a good time right now, excluding the National Basketball Association (NBA). The playoffs are hot in baseball, college football and the National Football League (NFL) are starting to hit their strides, and the National Hockey League (NHL) is revving up for the start. It is a great time overall for sports.
NBA: First we will start with the NBA, and there is not much good news to express in this section. It doesn't look like the owners and players will come to any agreements any time soon, which could put the regular season seriously in jeopardy. Players are toning their games either overseas or on city playgrounds across the country. The biggest news is that Kobe Bryant has about a 95% chance of playing in Italy until the end of the lockout now, and that would bring him back to his roots. Part of his childhood was spent in Italy. Overall though it does not look good for the NBA.
MLB: The playoffs are on and rocking in Major League Baseball (MLB). After one of the craziest days in the history of the storied game on Wednesday night, the playoffs will have to be incredible to exceed that excitement. While fans in both Boston and Atlanta will be kicking themselves until next spring training, the Tampa Bay Rays and St. Louis Cardinals enter the playoffs incredibly hot and ready for a run. The Philadelphia Phillies look primed for a run as well, them being the only team that eclipsed the 100 win mark this year. I am just excited for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers, which faces off to incredible fan bases and organizations. This is the best time of year for baseball and I wouldn't want to miss it if I were you.
Football: Football is also hitting its stride, with both the NFL and NCAA 1/3 or 1/4 through the year. There have already been some great surprises in both associations and I will be watching out for the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions for the rest of the year. I am still banking on a Minnesota Vikings comeback this year, because I really do believe that the schedule is soft from here on out and the team will sooner or later turn it around in the second half. Oklahoma, LSU, Stanford, and Alabama are looking very tough in college football. Alabama has a huge game in the Swamp against the Florida Gators tonight, and with a win there, they could move up in the standings. Stanford also has a big game against UCLA tonight and hopefully will stay undefeated. Overall though, the state of football in America is good and live as ever.
NHL: The NHL is starting up soon and the anticipation in Minnesota for a breakout year for the Wild is evident. With the offseason acquisitions of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi, the Wild will be looking to win the Northwest Division over arch nemesis Vancouver Canucks. After the tragic deaths of three NHL players and the whole entire KHL team, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, plane crash, it has been a horrifying offseason, that is why the start of hockey will be some good news during these tough times. Anticipation is building.
Of course, there are more sports out there, like college hockey and the English Premier League soccer, but later posts will have updates on these.
P.S. Go Tottenham Spurs!!
