Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball

The reason why you haven't seen a post in a while is because I have been experiencing two months abroad in the beautiful country of Israel.  I haven't got much experience with the sports scene here in Israel, but there is so much more to the country than just sports.  Jerusalem is one of the most incredible spiritual cities in the world.  Tel Aviv is a blooming metropolis that houses many ethnicity's and cultures.  The Negev is incredibly peaceful and would be a great place to retire to.  Most of all, though, I am learning an incredible amount about the situation in the Middle East and I feel that I have become very educated in that respect.  Tomorrow and the next day we will be spending in the Golan Heights, which was acquired by Israel during the Six Day War with Syria in 1967.  It is a beautiful and important strategic spot in the north of the country and I am very excited to go.  Now on to sports.

Like I said, I haven't had that much time to worry about sports, because the program has kept me very busy, but I got a little sports break last night when I attended the Maccabi Tel Aviv Vs. Ironi Ashkelon game at Nokia Center in Tel Aviv.  It was a very thrilling game for the first quarter, but that changed quickly as the better team quickly ran ahead.  The final score would turn out to be 108-75, and could have been more if the yellow and blue wouldn't have put in their scrubs for the final few minutes.  Keith Langford out of Kansas was definitely the star, finishing with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.  David Blu and Lior Eliyahu both also came up big with 20 points and 18 points, 8 rebounds respectively.  Ashkelon's leading scorer was Dwayne Mitchell with 12 points and in a close second with 11 points were Marco Killingsworth, Amit Simhon, and Raviv Limonad.  It was a pretty entertaining game and I was very surprised to see a Final Four hero Jamie Skeen of VCU as well as Duke grad Jon Scheyer.  The fans were crazy, yet the stadium wasn't nearly as full as I expected.  The fans of Gate 11 were the rowdiest, banging drums and yelling the whole game.  It was a very good and fun experience and I just wanted to let everyone know about how incredible sport in Israel can really be.
